Show some love [01 May 2006|08:52pm]

maewe
Yesterday I was in a great rage because I saw for the first time one of the horrible Fred Phelps's propaganda videos. It filled me with anger, and shock, and contempt, and sadness.

But then, i've found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sfln-GJ2D6E&search=Fred%20Phelps&watch2
and i kept crying for nearly an hour. It's a very moving video, very well made, very true. And it made me want to DO something, even if just a little something.
So this is it: watch it and tell me what you think. The message I want to bring is: your are not alone.

Love.

hey chilluns...

this is bobbie, and you're probably tired of me posting boston youth pride related things, especially because boston youth pride already happened, but this is more a bobbie related thing that happens to have to do with yp.

ok, so i was on the youth committee directing youth pride, and at one point i was standing on charles street directing vendors into the boston common, and two cars from safer homes worcester came in. there was this really cute girl with a tongue ring and a tan shirt and a black hat driving the second car, and she was wicked cool, and i saw her later too, waiting for the butchies but i lost her when everyone went up on stage with the butchies and i didn't even get her name, because i'm a giant wuss and didn't ask her when i had the chance, even though everyone was telling me to. so if anyone reads this and somehow knows who she is...

i know it's a long shot and i'm a loser to do this on LJ but i can't think of another way.

so who knows the cute girl with the tongue ring from safer homes worcester?!?

I hope someone reads this.

Today at OPY, we will be putting our January newsletter together. If you have poetry, photography, art (that will photocopy well), blurbs, rants, etc. that you'd like to see in print, please come and submit!

This will be distributed to various schools, the university and service organizations around Saskatoon and, over time, around Saskatchewan. We'll talk more about it tonight!

Drag Show Fundraiser Proposal

Why an all age’s drag show?

The holding of an all ages drag show has multiple purposes. It would benefit the OPY group in various ways. Some ways are:

Ø      The need to fundraise. OPY is in desperate need of funds; by hosting an all age’s drag show the youth involved in the group would have the opportunity to gain funds. This would be greatly appreciated by the entire OPY group.

Ø      The experience. An all age’s show would be a good experience for the youth  as they are not given the opportunity to be exposed to this major part of the Queer Community due to the drag shows currently being held at clubs where underage youth can not attend or participate. It would give youth the opportunity to experiment with different aspects of self-discovery.

 When & Where?

The answers to these questions depend on a few aspects.

Where: If we can ask a few queer-friendly places to rent out their venues and explain our situation with funds, we could possibly find a fairly inexpensive rate or a venue for nothing at all.

When: This needs to be discussed with the entire OPY group. We need to take into account cost of venue, venue availability, and the timing of other shows.

I'm not sure how many people will really care, but I thought I'd let you know as I'm sure I mentioned to a few people that I would see them.

Anyway, I won't be at OPY tonight, due to other plans I totally forgot about. So yes, no Britt this week!

See you all next Friday!

SASKATOON - Gay couples can now get married in more than half of the provinces and territories in Canada.

Saskatchewan became the seventh jurisdiction in the country to legalize same-sex marriage with a court ruling in Saskatoon today.

Justice Donna Wilson ruled that the traditional definition of marriage, as it exists now, discriminates against gay couples.

The constitutional challenge was brought forward by five couples and was not contested by the province or the federal government.

At least one couple has said they plan to tie the knot as early as this weekend.

Cranberry Flats Cancelled [14 Oct 2004|02:58pm]

basswomyn
[ mood | panicking ]

Sorry, everyone... there was a mix-up. We won't be going to Cranberry Flats tomorrow evening, so it's not necessary to be at the center by 5:30. The rest of the staff is going to Regina for a conference tomorrow, but I will be there and the group will be having another Project Night. It's almost exam time, and there are winter woolies to be created, so bring your creative projects and homework and we'll have a sit-and-chat night while helping each other out with homework and crafts.

I'm so sorry! Please spread the word around.

October post! [10 Oct 2004|12:53pm]

basswomyn
[ mood | quite content ]

We're going to have a busy month, everyone. I apologize for sending this as a special notice, but it's important to get the word out about these events as soon as possible.

This coming Friday, the 15th of October, we're going to take advantage of the still-decent weather and take a evening trip out to Cranberry Flats. It's gorgeous out there in the summer, but it's just as nice in the fall, with the leaves turning colour on the riverbank. Bring an empty water bottle or two, because the water from the pump near the shelter is some of the purest, best-tasting water you can get (for free, no less).

If anyone is available to drive, please let Julie or I know as soon as possible by calling the office at 665-1224.

IMPORTANT: If you are planning on coming out to Cranberry Flats, remember to dress appropriately, because it's getting dark and cold fast these days. Also, please be at the GLHS NO LATER than 5:30pm. If you're not there, we'll be gone.

The next Friday, the 23rd, we'll be having another Project Night. It's time for exams in high schools and midterms at the university, and there are lots of winter woolies to be made and holiday gifts to get started on making. Bring anything you want - a craft, some art, writing, homework, etc. - and we'll help each other out, whether it's with studying for exams or trading materials for our craft kits.

On Friday the 29th, the group will be carving pumpkins for the Monster Mash dance. The dance is being held the next day in the basement of Headquarters Pub (again, call the office for details and tickets.) We will be having a Silent Auction for the jack-o-lanterns, and the proceeds will go to the OPY petty-cash fund. Be sure to be there - we will be roasting the seeds and attempting to make pumpkin juice, and it's sure to be a blast.

Thanks for your attention, and have a great week!

New week, new OPY meeting. Now, what shall we do?

I know! Let's have a munchies potluck. Everyone brings chips,
cookies, brownies, cake, ice cream, pop, etc. and we pig out while
watching a queer/queer friendly movie.

ALLERGY ALERT: Just so you know, there are people in the group, as
far as I am aware, who are allergic to all nuts and nut products.
We're talking really allergic, as in conk-out-and-die anaphylaxis.
Please bear this in mind while bringing your treats.

See you all tomorrow!

Sorry I couldn't make it last week, I was away. Nor will I be able to make it again THIS week. I'm missing you all!

So yes, just an advance notice ... thing.

P.S. Did my camera ever make it from Edmonton to GLHS? I really super need it, man!

(Yes, I'm only posting so I can add the bit about the camera. No, I really do need it.)

Well, here we are with the month almost over... what WILL we do with ourselves?

I know... Project Night!

Bring your knitting, crochet, cross stitch, petit point, artwork, sketchpad, songbook, homework, etc. to show and share, and to work at. If you don't have anything, fear not... supplies for macaroni necklaces will be supplied.

Have a good evening... see you tomorrow!

OPY garage sale... location!!! [16 Sep 2004|09:27pm]

basswomyn
[ mood | very harried ]

Attention all city-dwelling OPY members...

We need a space for our garage sale. Badly. We need to get all of that stuff out of the staff room and onto someone's driveway/lawn ASAP.

Why? First of all, we need our staff room back. :$ Secondly, and most importantly for you OPY members, we need to sell that stuff so we can have petty cash. That way, when we rent a movie, go to see a movie, go play mini-golf, etc. we'll have a store of cash so that you guys don't have to pay.

Oh, yeah, and it's going to snow in the next couple of months. Garage sales don't go over well in the winter.

Let's hunt for a place! Any place! A home, a school parking lot... anything. I'm on the trail, Julie's on the trail... most of the people I know are racking their brains for a spot.

If you come up with something, please let me or Julie know ASAP!

Thanks

Hello, all!

This Friday, why don't we go see a movie at Rainbow Cinemas?

If we're going to do this, we're going to need everyone to bring
appropriate bus fare and at least $3.50 for admission to the movie.
Also (I cannot stress this enough) we are going to meet here at the
GLHS absolutely NO LATER than 6:00pm. That means 6 or beforehand,
not 6:10, not 6:20... because we'll have to take the bus at 6:15 in
order to get to the mall in time to catch any of the evening shows.

Got it? Excellent.

See you all tomorrow!

Friday, Sept 3 - NO OPY [01 Sep 2004|06:57pm]

basswomyn
[ mood | apologetic ]

Sorry, guys and gals, no OPY. We're heading off to camp fYrefly, which is a queer-oriented youth leadership conference in Edmonton. Should be a blast!

However... (the big however) if anyone cares at all about the garage sale and its contents, I need your help! Please! I can't do it by myself. Some of you have been very helpful, giving your time to sanitizing and pricing the items, but we need to get cracking on this stuff.

Also, we need a place to have the garage sale, preferably somewhere with a driveway... that would be nice. Ask your parents/roommates very nicely if they would be interested in giving up their driveway for a day or two, and supplying the use of their bathroom and water pitchers. Thanks! Please e-mail me at doubleplusungood at bust dot com if you can give me a hand tomorrow.

Thanks, and have a good week!

Hey all!

If you want a spot in the cars leaving for Beaver Creek this Friday, you have to be here at GLHS no later than 5:45pm, dressed in comfortable clothes.

We're going out to Beaver Creek for a little canoe trip down to the Berry Barn, where we'll partake in some delidgious pie and scenery. Sound good? We'll see you at quarter to 6, then!

Have a good rest of the week, and stay safe!
